Brother’s Weekend

Brother’s Weekend

Washington DCbachelor party, baltimore, golf, inner harbor, mortons, steak, suite, whiskey creek

Well I’m back in Maryland. And for the weekend it was man’cation time with my brother and his friends. It’s really for his bachelor party, but being the little brother I’m just gonna think of it as a guy’s weekend of golf, steaks, drinks, ****, and guns. Yeah, the Texan blood still runs strong. And no, I’m not going to go into too much detail about the night. Because that’s not what you’re here to read about right? Right.

So first off, Southwest delayed my flight arriving in Baltimore from 1am to 4am. That fucking blows since tee time was at 9am. Not to mention I needed to go through baggage claim and get on home. However, not gonna fault Southwest on this one. My connection in Denver was heart wrenching. The winds made a mostly smooth flight terrifying. On landing I think we dropped fifty feet twice. Felt my stomach in my throat. And to top it off, the pilot did something I never seen happen, probably for good reason. Right when we were about to touch down, bear in mind I’m in the window seat, the pilot accelerates, really fast. As if my heart rate needed anymore excitement. The plane speed up and we touched downed with the loud screeching of the tires. Never have I been so glad to be on solid ground. Okay, I know, it all really wasn’t too bad, but when you’re in the moment those thoughts that run in your mind can really play tricks on you. “Is this it? Is this what happens when planes…” Never mind. Thankfully I wasn’t any of that. The point was though, flights were getting delayed because of this. And this caused the incredible delay in arriving.

And this was the reason why I played so badly the next day. Yeah. Two hours of sleep. Not to mention the timezone change. It’s like I’m playing golf at 6am. I don’t even wake up at that time!

Anyways, the Whiskey Creek golf course was the best course I’ve played at in Maryland (I’m not an avid golfer). It’s pricey, but next time I’ll play on the weekdays. Once you arrive the staff treats you really well. Even clean your clubs for you when you’re done. The golf carts all have GPS systems. All really cool, but very useless for my short game. I had a co-worker give me pointers on my swing which actually helped me out a lot. But most of my strokes were on the green. Unbelievable. That was the only game I thought I’d never lose. But I had the worse time reading these greens. Didn’t break where I thought they would. Ran further than I’d like. Not to mention, the greens were really big. I can only imagine PGA sinking these twenty yard puts. Insane. Guess I should be happy the greens were big enough for me to hit.

After being in the hot sun for over four hours, it was time to head up to Baltimore’s Inner Harbor. We booked a suite at Embassy Suites which was great for the group. There were two bedrooms for my brother and I to crash, and a huge living room, dining room, and kitchen for everyone else. Surprisingly, the highlight of the place was, two bath rooms. Key when you got ten guys pissed drunk. Ahem, I’m getting ahead of the timeline here.

Let’s just talk about dinner. What you’re more interested in.

Morton’s Steakhouse was a solid bet. Service was good and the prices, well, it’s a fancy steakhouse, so they were as expected. Expensive. Still, the quality was good. My advice. Don’t go for size. I did and I’d rather go with the quality of cut here. This place isn’t known for having the best in my book. There’s several in the area that appear to be a step above, like Capital Grille or Flemings. But I’ll save those for next time. I needed a place that can take large groups and be able to handle a bunch of dudes. Morton, you’re alright in my book.

Center Cut Ribeye @Morton’s Steakhouse
Brother’s Weekend

My brother got the ribeye which was cooked perfectly. One thing I should add is to get the foie gras butter. It takes the steak to a totally different level. And I wouldn’t pour it all on at the beginning. Just savor it, you’re inner carnivore will thank you. $47USD

16oz Filet Mingon @Morton’s Steakhouse
Brother’s Weekend

There could never be too much of a good thing if it were in the form of prime beef. I got the porterhouse to get the best of both world. Utter failure. Too much gristle. Should have gone with the real deal. $58USD

Golf at Whiskey Creek
Brother’s Weekend

Teeing up at a deceivingly harmless par 3. Little did we know, the greens run fast and relentless here. Or maybe my putting was a little off. Just a little. Damn this sport. Still one of the best course in Maryland. Gonna set you back a pretty penny though. Weekend rate of $103/18 holes.

Baltimore Inner Harbor
Brother’s Weekend

Septembers are hot and humid, so sometimes it’s good to check out the harbor when night falls. Not everything is open, but there are some boats that still sail and of course, there’s always Hooters.

Jumbo Crab Cake @Morton’s Steakhouse
Brother’s Weekend

I haven’t been back to Maryland for two years so I was craving some crab cakes. I have to say, not a good idea at a steak house. It wasn’t bad, but wasn’t as good as what Maryland crab cakes can be. This tasted like every other place outside of Maryland, trying to make crab cakes. Not bad, but when you’ve had good crab cakes, the rest becomes mediocre. $17.50USD

Brussel Sprouts @Morton’s Steakhouse
Brother’s Weekend

Probably the best side dish here. Firm and tasty halves mixed in with what else but bacon. Bacon. Enough said. $12USD
