Chinatown Summer Nights
These events were usually about opening up the traditional Chinatown facade to DJ’s, food trucks, and street vendors, a sorta night market, neon style. However, this night was not only in honor of Chinatown’s 75 anniversary, but it was about the unveiling of the first Bruce Lee statue to be raised in the U.S. And if you have read the news recently, there’s some complications in getting this to be permanent. Whatever happens, I guess I’m glad to see this in person. Though I have to say, the statue looks a bit out of proportion, like the creator fashioned the body after the Capcom character Fei Long, which was of course, a tribute to Bruce Lee. Still, it was great to see this tribute.
We spent the rest of the evening eating, drinking, and visiting some of the open art galleries around Chinatown. A fun use of the first half of the evening before really drinking the night away. They had a beer garden with local brewers and a stage with a live band. Pretty crowded. The beer ticket mechanism soon became annoying, so it was off to Little Tokyo, to Weilands, to knock down endless amounts of beer until they closed.
Don’t worry, we sobered up before heading home.

The sponsors sure milked the anticipation on the unveiling. But oh boy, did they pull in a big crowd. Found my little spot in the mix of it all. Glad they made it larger life!

My breakfast, if you consider waking up at 11 and heading immediately out to eat, breakfast. It was breakfast somewhere in the world and my sleep clock was on that timezone. And yeah, this was how I like my morning meals, broken rice, pork chop, deep fried tofu thingy, and a fried egg. Love being close to Little Saigon. Oh, I stayed in Anaheim. $6.99USD

Didn’t know Chinatown can be lit up with neon did you? Well, it is LA.

There were about eight food trucks in the area. We decided only to try out one, the Brazilian one.

The portion may look small, but the creamy goodness fills you up. The fried potato sticks add the needed texture to the dish. After finishing, I had no craving for anything else. $8USD

Wish you two were still living up in SF. But I guess I have a reason to come down to LA… to get a non-blurry shot of you two.

During the night they projected classic Bruce Lee movies. Wish it had sound.

Drinking kept in the confines of flimsy metal gates. Thankfully, we got out. Not like people stayed there all night. Plenty of bars in the area.
