Neighborhood Sushi Zaoh

United States · San Franciscofood, japanese food, sushi, west soma

Zaoh is about a ten minute walk from our place, which puts it right at the limit of what my kid will tolerate getting there. But we make it work. We’ve learned to go early, right around 5pm, before the dinner rush hits and before patience runs out.

The place is on Mission at Van Ness, easy to miss from the outside. Small storefront, no fanfare. Inside it’s cozy and unpretentious, a sushi counter up front, plenty of small tables for optimal arrangements. It feels comfortable without feeling cramped. The lighting is warm and the whole place has that neighborhood regulars energy that’s hard to manufacture.

What surprised me early on was how accommodating it is with a newborn in tow. Nobody makes you feel like you’re an inconvenience for showing up with a baby. The staff are genuinely friendly and the low key atmosphere means you’re not stressing about noise or disruption. Coming in at 5pm helps too. The room is calm at that hour and you can actually settle in.

The fish is solid. Cuts are fresh, the nigiri is well made and the chirashi bowl is consistently good. The menu covers the usual Japanese staples beyond sushi too, teriyaki, tempura udon, soba, all at prices that don’t ask much of you. Lunch specials are good value if you can make that work.

It’s not going to challenge your expectations of what a sushi dinner can be. That’s not the point. Zaoh is the kind of place you go when you want good fish, a friendly room and a bill that doesn’t sting.

Verdict: A reliable neighborhood sushi spot that’s as easy on the wallet as it is on the stress levels.

The fish may not be flown in from Japan. However, the freshness and quality is there in the prep and presentation. This is my regular go to when we make it out to this place.
