Off the Grid – Presidio

Off the Grid – Presidio

San Franciscobiking, food truck, fried chicken, humphry slocomb, king crab sandwich, lamb burger, off the grid, picnic at the presidio

When the weather gets as good as it does like today – sunny, bright, high sixties, with random cold breezes. It was a perfect day to spend outside. Really. Any warmer around here and all the fedoras would look even more ridiculous. No joke. Anyways, being outside with food was the goal and we needed to find a place like that.

Off the Grid is an organization that brings together food trucks around town and hosts venues for them. Today, it was Off the Grid’s Picnic at the Presidio. A great idea when it lands on a day the city fends off the fog. The Presidio area was pretty easy to get to. Away from Golden Gate Park and Fort Mason, you should be able to drive here. Parking was just as easy since they aren’t fighting with any other businesses in this defunct military base. Oh wait, maybe there was a little competition from the Walt Disney Family Museum. Though, I think this event promoted them more than ever with all the children there. The picnic was held on a fairly large field with music which sounded like it was coming from someone’s iPod. If it wasn’t your thing, you could move down the field to play some games in the grass or fly some kites. We biked here so we found a corner of the field to camp out with our bikes. Such a relaxing time having a cold brewsky and being reminded of why we all moved to this city. No, not for the Anchor Steam. It was for, well, everything.

So if you wanted to see the food truck scene, and how it’s become all fancy here in San Francisco, you can either look up the individual trucks or check out Off the Grid. Do the latter to see more, but remember to stock your wallet with lots of cash. Enjoy!

Beer Bucket Picnic
Off the Grid – Presidio

Yeah, nothing like spreading out on the grass and curling up to your beer. Anchor Summer beers at six bucks a bottle or a bucket of five for twenty-four dollars. I see what you did there. Even at five bucks a beer, things are pricey. But I get to save a buck when I get five. Don’t worry, I’m not complaining. $24USD a bucket.

Off the Grid at the Presidio

Music, sunny weather, and happy people, a recipe for grump cat to hate the world. Luckily, if you come with friends, this day can turn out pretty great. Though I didn’t have too much fun biking over the hills.

Fried Chicken from Wing Wings
Off the Grid – Presidio

Okay, so it was pretty good. Chicken wasn’t too dry and the seasoning not too salty. I’ll only mark it better than Farmer Browns because this wasn’t too greasy. Not bad eh? Well, get ready to empty your wallet for deep fried done right. $14USD for four pieces.

Beef Brisket Sandwhich from Fins on the Hoof
Off the Grid – Presidio

Not sure if this is available at their brick and mortar restaurant. But a good looking sandwich which I should have made room for.

Lamb Burger from Fins on the Hoof
Off the Grid – Presidio

Grass fed lamb. Not a bad way to go. I didn’t personally have this, but my friends gave it a thumbs up, so I’ll trust them on this one. I do prefer my burgers with beef though. $10USD

Sauces from Wing Wings
Off the Grid – Presidio

Various sauces, but the one to point out was the “Hella Hot Sauce”, their habanero sauce which was very spicy at first. But after a while, I think your tongue numbs out enough to taste the tangy sauce. So yes, it’s perfect for that masochistic side of yours.

Malted Milk Chocolate
Off the Grid – Presidio

A Humphry Slocombe classic, though I really wanted the Secret Breakfast, their other classic. But not complaining since they only had four flavors in their coolers. Don’t expect a food truck. $4USD

King Crab Sandwich
King Crab Sandwich

I can’t remember the name of the tent where I got this. I do remember how it tastes and if you’re a lobster roll fan like I am, this won’t cut it for you. A very different taste. King crab was a bit too much on the briny side to pair up with mayo and the avocado sauce. Maybe it’s an acquired taste. Not on my favorite list. Watch your wallet on this one. $15USD.
