Pearl Harbor
So I don’t usually do the touristy stuff, but it’s my third time here and I haven’t checked out one of the most historical landmarks here in Oahu, Pearl Harbor. The very place where tragedy struck only to make a country more resilient. Impressive. And even more impressive was the Missouri, a battleship that was basically a city floating on water. And no, a cruise ship doesn’t compare. Touring a battle ship gives you a true perspective of what it is, a ship made exclusively for firepower. There were so many guns on this ship, it was amazing one kamikaze pilot came close to the amount of munitions this ship can dish our at a target. It makes me wonder why they ever decided to retire this vessel. But lucky for us, that meant people get to see what our navy had in service for over three decades.
Afterwards we met up with a old friend at the Outrigger Canoe Club of Waikiki. Very nice place and very good to catch up again with my buddy Doug. If you ever seen the snowboarding video in Hokkaido, this is one of the guys. Great times!
Food:
It was a low key day. For lunch we ate downtown, near Chinatown after an unlucky stop for some manapua’s at Char Hung Sut (they run out early), at Fort Street Cafe. As your lost tourist drone, we Yelp’ed this place and ordered what their T-Shirts told us, to order their famous garlic chicken. Not bad, but too saucy and sweet for me. Chicken was fried just right. Crispy and tender. But it reminded me of General Tso’s chicken which I’ve grown away from. But I see how people can like this. It’s to the point and filling. A good meal if I were back in college. For dinner we were at the outrigger club. As I mentioned earlier, it was fancy, and I for some reason chose to go with a burger. Odd right, but hey, I needed a change. It was well worth it. The place does things right. Medium rare is medium rare. That’s all I really need next to fresh veggies and buns.
Getting Around:
Yeah, at day 5, I recommend a car. Even renting a moped won’t do you good here. It rains now and then. For a few hours sometimes. And even though there’s traffic on the highways, I’ve never seen a scooter on the major freeways. Don’t think there’s enough local roads to get you places.
Costs:
$40 a person for tickets to the Missouri and sub
$1 for two malasadas at Adega
$6 for the Garlic Chicken plate at Fort Street Cafe
$?? Doug treated us to dinner at the Outrigger
