Blast From the Past

Blast From the Past

Singaporebar, brewerkz, happy hour, mussels, riverside

Thursday was a light day, for work at the very least. But the main thing I remember about this day was going form local local places, like a mall close to the university. We went there to check out how graduate students go to bind their books. Not bad quality for about $10 Singaporean dollars. I was mainly interested after talking to my co-worker about it the night before. Didn’t think these places existed. Guess it’s a known thing among post four-year students like myself. Maybe one day I’ll strive for those extra degrees. Well, whenever I win the lottery.

Afterwards, it was off to one of the big things I had planned for the trip, meeting up with old co-workers in Singapore. Man, what a crew. I already miss the spunk these fools slash closet geniuses, bring out in a little tech talk. But one of the things I found interesting, was why they chose to stay in Singapore. They are expats. They are married. There’s other cities in Asia that do tech. Among their personal reasons, one was common, safety. Singapore was one safe city, next to Tokyo, but with a lower cost of living. I guess some of the crazy rules and punishments do work out in a way. Now if they could just do something about the heat.

Assorted Appetizers @Brewerkz
Blast From the Past

Like any other microbrewery, you’ll find your typical bar foods. The wings were the only thing interesting in this lot. And that’s above the truffle oil fries. Those needed to be cooked a bit more cleanly to get the truffle oil to come out. As for the quesadilla, well it’s a quesadilla in Singapore. You can only hope for okay. $17-20.00SGD.

Mussels @Brewerks
Blast From the Past

Okay, so they have mussels, sorta a staple at bars. But no, they were good. Not only was the cream sauce great with fries, the meat in these suckers were huge, practically filled up the shell. Unlike the ones I usually find, dried and shriveled. Never the crowd pleaser. But this one was the winner to go with the seemingly endless pints of beer. $21.00SGD.

Curry Chicken with Rice
Blast From the Past

This was a small stand in the mall. Cheap and hit the spot. A Little like Vietnamese curry with the coconut milk base, but enough savoriness for me to polish off the rice with. Love finding little comfort food stands. $3.00SGD

Wanton Mee
Blast From the Past

I don’t recall the name of this place. I want to say iwantnoodles but I can’t seem to find it on the internet anywhere. It was close to work and had air conditioning. It was a hot sunny day! But yeah, this is one interesting take on Hong Konbg’s Wonton Mien. Noodle were nice and firm, but the sweet sauce puts this behind the HK version no matter how much meat they put in it.

XO Chicken Wings
Blast From the Past

As I mentioned earlier, I forgot the name of this place. But if I ever go back here I wouldn’t order these chicken wings. I don’t taste any XO sauce in there nor in the sweet and sour contraption they have on the side. These are deep fried greasy no-so-goodness. $8.80SGD
