Food Overload

Singaporefood, high end, kaya toast, shopping, top ten list, ya kun

Can you eat everything in Singapore in one day? Obviously no, but it doesn’t hurt to try. You know the saying, aim for the stars. If you miss, you still can still come up with a top ten list. In my case, I got through everyone’s top ten things to eat in Singapore. Now it’s time for me to come up with my own. Well, maybe I need one more trip. Come on, there’s so much here. And I really wanted to try those odd looking ice cream sandwiches. They looked so good in the unforgiving heat. But the line was way too long to wait under the sun. We had other motives to be outside.

That was, to shop along Orchard Road.

Don’t get me wrong, it wasn’t a stroll from one plaza to another. It was a mad dash like two vampires from one haven to the next with our only sinful delight being the blasting AC units within. Oh I wanted to cry like a baby when it was time to go outside. But I digress. Shopping here was huge. Department stores and malls crammed into this half mile stretch of road. Each one sporting similar name brand shops. I think I saw at least three Ferragamo stores within a block of each other. Not all were high end. We ended up at Far East Plaza which was very local local. Compared to Paragon, it was like a 360 in terms of pricing. I’m not sure how many places we stopped at. Somewhere in the hundreds I assume. All to get some underwear and two pair of jeans I already think are way too skinny for me. Especially now after gorging all of this day.

We ate everywhere.

From the hawker stands to the disappointing Ya Kun Kaya Toast (see my description) to mall food courts to a fancy dinner along the river. Yes, count them. At least four meals with a bunch of sharing. This day alone accounted for the 4 out of 5 pounds I gained on this trip. don’t worry, I’m not complaining about it. I’ll wear the bulge as a badge of honor.

Hindu Temple
Food Overload

Ran across this temple a few blocks from my hotel next to Chinatown. You’ll have to take off your shoes to enter, but it was fairly interesting inside. I didn’t stay long having seen many temples and the heat wasn’t being too kind.

Beef Satay @Boot Quay
Food Overload

Such a disappointment. Maybe I’ve been spoiled at other places? No. These are tiny and given the price even more of a rip off. $10SGD

Bamboo Clams @Boot Quay
Food Overload

We got these at a “discounted” price. Don’t worry, not an end of day thing. They only wanted more business and we actually came in just to try these out. It had more of squid texture, chewy and firm. I’ll get these again, but not at these prices/ $13SGD (each)

Frog Legs @Boot Quay
Food Overload

This was probably the nail in the coffin for trying a seafood restaurant in this area. Never again. I mean why would you cook something so light tasting in something so heavy and salty. $18SGD

Clark Quay
Food Overload

At night this place was one big clubbing/bar area. You’ll see everyone out in full gear adorn with sexy styling to douchey attire. To each their own. For me, I was here to show someone around and take pictures like a diligent tourist. Now can some body please drink from these Tron water fountains so I’ll have an interesting picture.

Fish Noodle Soup @Maxwell Road Hawker Center
Food Overload

A light airy soup despite its creamy look. The broth had a light coconut taste with a touch of curry. The noodles were your fat rice noodle which was a little difficult to eat. Not that that will deter me from eating it. $5SGD

Hainan Chicken Rice @Maxwell Road Hawker Center
Food Overload

Finally got around to try out the Tian Tian stall. And I have to say, it was a whole grade level more than what I had before. You can definitely taste the chicken in the rice. As for the chicken itself, very well done. Hats off to you Tian Tian, you’ve definitely earned that top spot. $4SGD

Poached Eggs @Ya Kun
Food Overload

Probably the highlight of having kaya toast. I love runny yolk eggs with soy sauce and a dash of white pepper. Made the sweetness of the toast bearable.

Kaya Toast @Ya Kun
Food Overload

Okay, I’ll admit, I don’t get why this was suppose to be good. Disclaimer, I usually don’t eat sweet things for breakfast. Cereal was the only exception. Still, this stuff is overly sweet to me, and the toast, too thin. Don’t mean to be negative on this stuff. It’s just not for me.

Assorted Fruits @Far East Plaza
Food Overload

This was at some juice shop on the second floor of the plaza. Each package has enough to produce a 12 ounce supply. Gotta love fresh fruits.

Yellow Watermelon @Far East Plaza
Food Overload

After seeing this, we had to try it out. The juice shop cut off the thick shell and sent the pulp including the seeds into the grinder. The result was a less sweeter and a slightly tangy version of watermelon juice. With some ice, this works great as a cool-me-down. $2.40SGD

Laksa @Ion Food Opera
Food Overload

Never ask for a less spicier version of this stuff. It makes it taste like plain coconut soup. It wasn’t too bad, but for a bowl of Laksa, this wasn’t forgivable. $7.80SGD

Oyster Omelet @Ion Food Opera
Food Overload

This comes in three sizes dictated by price. I went for the smallest one. As good as this was at the initial tasting, this dish fell short once we got halfway through. We ran out of oysters and was left with some egg mixed with this gooey greyish junk. Not very pleasing. $8SGD

Fish Head Curry @Ion Food Opera
Food Overload

Okay, so you really shouldn’t order this stuff in a food court, hawker court yes, food court no. It’s just too… clean? Didn’t have the punch I thought it would have. Fish was good. Meat was firm. Curry was alright. Still, it didn’t seem to come together. $25SGD
