Itacho Sushi

Itacho Sushi

Hong Kongcauseway bay, japanese, sushi, tablet ordering, verdict: pass

There are tons of sushi restaurants in Hong Kong with a good variety of them in Causeway Bay. You can find high end establishments to your conveyor belt chains. What we chose was some where in between, Itacho Sushi. The prices weren’t too exorbitant and they had a huge selection of fish as well as some unfamiliar ones, like foie gras sushi. Interesting indeed.

One of the things you do need to know about this place is their tablet ordering system. Pretty high tech but you lose that interaction with the sushi chef and even the wait staff. I don’t know about you, but when I have sushi, especially with fish I haven’t tried before, having the chef there is priceless. Here, you’ll need to know what you’re looking for and create your own meal. Good for you prepared types. Only one piece of advice though, if the order of eating sushi is important to you, don’t put everything in one order. Just order throughout the meal and if you trust me, avoid the ones I mention below. Or not. At a total of $432HKD for two people, it wasn’t a hefty price to pay for being adventurous.

And sorry, I can’t attach pricing below. The check was all in Chinese.

Verdict: I’d come here again if I’m watching my budget and wanted my usual cuts of fish. But to recommend it to you, no, this won’t be memorable.

Foie Gras Sushi @Itacho Sushi

I know, a little gimmicky and odd for me to order. But given how I haven’t had Foie Gras since the ban was lifted in California, I had to satisfy this craving. The result… craving still on. This tasted like simple liver and lacked the buttery goodness you’d expect. Why did I fall for this trap? And Itacho, for real, take this off your menu.

Here’s the highlight of the night. Red snapper, toro, and Wagyu beef. See how plating can make things look super tasty?? Yeah, seeing this makes me crave for these pieces even more. Though, I have to admit, it wasn’t the highest quality cut of toro nor Wagyu. Still good eating.

Salmon Roll @Itacho Sushi

Rolls here are much smaller and I like that. If you’re a roll person that means more variety. I’m not such a person, but I was happy rolls won’t make up the bulk of the meal. Plus I think rolls are a bigger thing in the West. Pun intended. As for this, salmon topped spicy tuna roll goes, well, it’s good as a filler. I would have liked my salmon non-seared, but that’s what we ordered. Not bad tasting though.

I know this picture doesn’t do it justice. I blame the plate. In any case, the fish was good and fresh with the exception of the uni. I’d avoid ordering that here. And I don’t like how there’s no method in the ordering of the fish. It all comes out at once and it’s up to us to decide on the taste journey. At least put the seared stuff on a separate plate.

This was a nifty way to order and to check on your order. A good way to start small and add things during your feast. My only complaint was that you can get carried away with ordering and once everything comes out, you don’t know what’s what. That could happen at most sushi restaurants, but at least someone was there to point out which fish was which.
