Laundry Day

Laundry Day

Singaporebak kut teh, chinatown, claypot, laundry, Tanjong Pagar

Yes. I had to do laundry, because I packed light on this trip expecting to do a lot of shopping and I mean a lot. But lo and behold, I couldn’t find anything I liked. That didn’t mean I was a picky shopper, it was more like I couldn’t find my way around the malls. They are all interlocked in some way in the labyrinth of the MRT stations. I felt lucky to find any sort of directory. And once I did, I didn’t recognize most of the stores. So basically, I was wandering around hoping to see some cool new threads. Unfortunately, that wasn’t the case and I found myself in the Chinatown doing laundry. But not all was lost. The Tanjong Pagar part of Chinatown, I hear there are four more areas, had some food shops. So during the wash cycle at a 24-hour-no-need-to-add-detergent laundromat, I ventured out for some food.

The area, as you could imagine, had more food toward Chinese tastes. After combing four block, twice, I finally found a place. It served bak kut teh, a pork rib soup, that’s on my list of things to eat. Glad to have found it in a small center of shops. This salvaged my uninteresting time after work.

Looking back at it, I think this day was mostly Chinese food influence. For lunch we went to have claypot chicken. Something totally on the Cantonese side. Rich hearty flavors helped me polish off two bowls of rice. Overkill for lunch to most people. Me, on the other hand, was exactly how I want to spend my afternoon, in food coma heaven.

Surprisingly not as salty as it looks. Maybe I’ve been scarred a little too much from the U.S. renditions of claypot foods. The sauce was light and a savory sweet. Made me want to smother the sauce all over my rice. The chicken though was really soft. I’d imagine the whole chicken was simmered for hours before it was ready to be served. $17SGD

Around Chinatown, Tanjong Pagar
Laundry Day

It’s almost like a night market walking around the area. Much cleaner than the ones in Hong Kong and even Taipei. Then again, everything here felt like a tourist trap.

Temple @Chinatown, Tanjong Pagar

A well maintained temple in the heart of Singapore. For reasons unknown to me, I didn’t feel like going inside this temple.

Fried Bringal w/ minced Pork @Kia Hiang Restaurant

This was stir fried eggplant with ground pork. A dish that complimented the claypot chicken well. If I only had this dish, I would have been happy too. $9SGD

Kai Lan w/ Shrimp @Kia Hiang Restaurant

Our veggies for our meal. The pallet cleanser. I love this vegetable. The firm snap of the leaves gave our meal some texture. The shrimps though, weren’t anything special. Actually could have done without them. It was all about the veggies. $12SGD

Shops in Chinatown, Tanjong Pagar
Laundry Day

Here’s where I found the shop for a nice bowl of bak kut teh. It’s nestled in the back of the other shops. There were enough communal tables to get your own seat. Not the busiest of places. Doesn’t mean it was the worse of places though.

Bak Kuh Teh @Chinatown, Tanjong Pagar

This reminded me of the beef brisket soup in Hong Kong, but this was a totally different animal, literally. The pork ribs were slow cooked to the point the meat was falling off the bone. The soup was light and airy. Went great with the rice. $6.50SGD

Let’s just say these were boneless. Not quite the ribs I was expecting. But who cares. This tasted good. $3SGD (each)
