Arashiyama Bamboo Grove

Japan · Kyoto — bamboo, grove, shrine, travel, water purification ritual, water well

After our boat ride we went up into the bamboo forrest. We passed by a few restaurants and ryokans overlooking the river and turned up the street. A few rickshaw drivers were running their patrons up the block. It was a little amusing given the short distance they covered. I figured they were raising money

Cruising Along Kyoto

Japan · Kyoto — boat, cruise, food, hozugawa river, travel

Arashiyama Bamboo Grove was on the agenda today. But instead of going directly there we went two train stops further to Kameoka Station. That was where we started our Hozugawa River boat cruise back into Kyoto. Most of it was a gentle ride through the lush green mountains. There were some rapids they warned you about.

Late Night in Dotonbori

Japan · Osaka — canal, dotonbori, late night, restaurant

Thanks to numerous delays on our flight, we arrived to our hotel in Osaka around midnight. That didn’t leave too many options for food. I should have taken into account the long train ride from the airport. It was close to an hour on the express. Still it would have been late and I was starving. So

Late Night Prawns

Taiwan — fishing, food, prawns, shrimp fishing, taipei, travel, yonghe

Here’s something different to do, shrimp fishing. And I don’t mean off the coasts of Taiwan. This is done within the city, in buildings made for long hours of fishing fun. I just so happened to tag along with a company outing and I have to say, thank goodness I did. This pastime requires it’s own

Siloam

Korea — fomentation, food, jjimjilbangs, late, sauna, travel

Want to know what I thought was the best part of this trip? Believe it or not, it wasn’t food (though it ranks up there) or even the sites. It was discovering Korea’s 24-Hour Jjimjilbang, bath house or sauna. This wasn’t the hot spring bath houses I’m used to in Taiwan or Japan. In my opinion

Bukchon Hanok Village

Korea — bukchon hanok village, food, seoul, traditional homes, travel

There’s this little area east of Gyeongbokgung Palace that was a delight to visit. A place that’s getting a little more popularity It’s the Bukchon Hanok Village. An area preserving the traditional homes of Korea. And not typical preserving way of turning these homes into museums. No. Everyday people still live in these homes and we tourists get to

Cat Cafe

Korea — cat cafe, cats, myeongdong, seoul, travel, verdict: pass

In Myeongdong you’ll find plenty of things to shop for. But when your feet are tired and you need that caffeinated pick me up, where else to go then… a cat cafe? Yes, a place where you enjoy your coffee in a room full of frolicking felines. A hellish place for those with allergies yet a bewildering place for people

Pro Ganjang Gejang

Korea — food, gejang alley, raw crabs, seoul, sinsa

Our journey back brought us through Sinsa station, the station around Gejang Alley. An area known for restaurants specializing in ganjang gejang, raw crabs marinated in soy sauce. It was a bit early for dinner though. So what to do. Stop by of course. Early meant no crowds and no need to make reservations (luckily I was correct).
